Tom Allan left his first graduate job in Publishing to try and get a job in conservation. Working for nothing for the National Trust, with a grotty caravan for accommodation, someone told him that the Thatcher opposite was looking for an Apprentice. So began a life in Thatching.
This book is a beautifully written overview of the thatching industry - and associated reed growing industry - across the world. It is erudite, charming and absolutely fascinating. I began reading it because I'd been given a proof and then found I left work early, and arrived late, because I was so absorbed in the words I didn't want to put it down.
A totally unexpected treasure. Whoever you give it to, this book will take them by surprise, delight them and educate them. What is the most fire-proof form of roof? Thatching of course.... Best for climate change? Well, you can make your own mind up on that.
